Digital Camera Lenses and Accessories When people
think about digital cameras they almost always think Mega pixels.
Frankly, there is much more to the quality of a digital camera
picture than simply how many pixels they produce, although obviously that
is a key factor. The lens of
the camera has a much bigger contribution to the overall quality of the
final photo than people realize. When
people consider a lens, they often consider the zoom ratios first, but
there are also many other things to consider that depending on the persons
actual needs may be more important. Optical
Zoom Versus Digital Zoom
When considering a
digital camera zoom always consider the “optical zoom” rating more
critical compared to the “digital zoom.”
In simple terms, digital zooming an image is analogous to zooming
into an image on the screen in a picture viewing program.
The actual quality of the image can never be higher than the optics
originally created. Lens
“Speed”
Often referred to as the “Speed” on the lens, the “f-stop” should
be a serious consideration for camera buyers.
The lower the f-stop, the more light that a lens takes in and the
faster the shutter of the camera can move to take the same image.
Cameras with a big zoom range often have slower lenses, thus taking
in less light and in low lighting situations these cameras will take the
picture at slow shutter speeds, thus causing the final image too blur.
Look for cameras with f-stops below 2.8 but if you really like the
other features of the camera you are considering (and high zoom numbers
usually lead to higher f-stops) then just be aware that the cameras with
the higher f-stops will require more light to get a sharp picture. Add-on
Additional Lenses for Digital Cameras
Additional lens can be attached to Digital cameras to extend the
properties of the fixed digital camera lens.
Of course, on high-end digital cameras, the entire lens can be
removed and replaced with another.
For most consumer digital cameras, however, the additional lens
attaches to the original lens to create fish-eye, wide angle, close-up
macro photography or a telephoto lens. Also a big factor for
attachment to a digital camera (or any camera for that matter) is a UV
filter lens. This protects the original lens and filters out UV
light.
